America (WABYH)

This one is probably a little unfair and raw. It was written on November 10, 2016, if that helps clarify matters.

Excuse me if I seem a little maudlin.
Forgive me if my shame is on display.
See, I dreamt that I could soar
and I fell straight through the floor
and I should have known that things would go this way.

I tried to put my faith in human nature.
In retrospect, that wasn’t very smart.
I’m feeling like a fool –
I forgot the golden rule:
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.

First they’ll pretend to be your friend
and you’ll defend them
and suspend your disbelief.
Then they’ll get bored
and cut the cord
and you’ll have whored and warred
and gored yourself with grief.
(Heil to the chief.)

Objectively, it borders on impressive.
They’ve got it down to something of an art.
You’ll think this time they’re nice.
You’ll surely pay the price.
America will always break your heart.

First they’ll pretend to be your friend
and you’ll defend them
and suspend your disbelief.
Then they’ll get bored
and cut the cord
and you’ll have whored and warred
and gored yourself with grief.
(Heil to the chief.)

So I say this to myself as a reminder
to see it clearly next time from the start.
Don’t believe the hype.
Read between the stripes.
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.
America will always break your heart.
