The Mirror

Play

To begin – you need to imagine the scene:
Mis’rable people, crushed by regret and routine.
Desperate punters all searching for something divine,
praying their evening will sparkle and shimmer and shine…

To begin – we owe it to them to succeed,
to feed on their clamour, to give them the glamour they need.
Lucky we’ve got such a magical canvas at hand
To conjure them up a volcano of silver and sand…

They need a mirror. (BVs: “They need a mirror.”)
They need a fabulous feast for the eyes.
And with a simple reflection
this gorgeous erection is double the size.
They need a mirror. (BVs: “They need a mirror.”)
They need a duplicate dose of delight.
They’re gonna dig the gig when it’s twice as big
And echoing into the night.

There are those – who hiss and insist I’m obsessed
Call me Narcissus – this is the curse of the blessed
But don’t let them ruin the plan I pursue in the tent
Decked out in specular splendour in ev’ry event

You need a mirror. (BVs: “You need a mirror.”)
And you can study a stranger by stealth
Or fill out your dance card
Or just take a long hard look at yourself.
You need a mirror. (BVs: “You need a mirror.”)
You need a mirror. (BVs: “You need a mirror.”)
Full of colour and movement and light
And then you’ll feel the flame out of ev’ry frame
Reflecting the heat of the night.

We’ll hold some auditions for decent musicians and actors wherever we go!
From Sweden to Spain there’ll be sweet entertainers who wanna be part of the show!
For Europe’s an oyster, and we’re just the boys to be
shucking and plucking her pearls!
So while you’re cracking wise at the bar with the guys,
I’ll be out the back f….ussing and heeding the cries
Of delicate creatures with beautiful thighs
Who perform in the guise of girls…

I need a mirror. I need a mirror.
I need illusion and wonder and art.
I need a world of protection
for ev’ry confection I hold in my heart…
We need a mirror! (BVs: “We need a mirror!”)
We need a mirror! (BVs: “We need a mirror!”)
For diaphonous dreams to take flight!
We really dig the gig when it’s twice as big,
reflecting a taste of the night.
We really dig the gig when it’s twice as big…
and reflecting a taste of the night!
